@mjjzf @lstench When !Canada passes !C11 w/b illegal to replace installed Windows w/ free software without #Microsoft permission !CDNpoli
-
Please tell me this is a joke?
-
It has to do with the “locked bootloader” thing they’re trying to roll out (“safeboot?”). It is effectively a copy of the DMCA tampering with locks clause which is already in effect in America. Here in Canada, we’ve managed to fend off the stupid copyright reforms for about 10 years, but they keep trying every chance they get.
-
on that note… (rolling my eyes in advance) please get your legislators, “the lawmakers,” to stop giving our parliamentarians copies of your laws to pass here. Literally. This is what keeps happening, especially on the copyright file (and on defense, but let’s not even get started on that).

@laurelrusswurm @lstench @ryanweal what if you build your own desktop?
-
@mohanpram I tried hard to buy kid an OS free laptop; #impossible ... to buy computer in a store in !Canada it has Windows or Mac installed
-
@ryanweal Agreed would be better if USTR/MPAA left rest of world to make our own laws, but US system is even more broken than ours
-
Here are a few Companies in Canada that sell Linux systems: http://www.debian.org/distrib/pre-installed#ca The list may not be up to date.
-
@laurelrusswurm Dell used to sell #FreeDOS computers that were usually out-of-the-box ready for Ubuntu. Not sure if #Canada included.
-
@gomerx Yes, you can special order them, but you can’t walk into a retail store and test drive them. And they cost a lot more.
-
@lnxwalt Sporadically retailers would carry them; once Bill C-11 passes that will be even less likely
-
@lnxwalt Minister of Heritage (behind DRM law) liked being called the “ipod Minister” b/c thinks knowing what to buy indicates tech prowess
-
This is making me angry!! Can’t something be done?
-
I paid extra because freedom is important to me.
-
@lstench most #Canadians don’t know !copyright will harm us and our children. By the time they know #toolate #silentnewsmedia
-
@laurelrusswurm it’s quite ironic that the US is now pushing a global copyright agenda since we kept out of it for ~100 years
-
@laurelrusswurm do you have a copyright office that lists exceptions? Here it pretty seems like every reasonable exception is granted. Irritating to go through the process but at least it seems to work
